Monument to Transformation 1989-2009

(2009)

WHAT IS THE MAIN IDEA OF THE PROJECT AND WHO IS THE TARGET GROUP?

The aim is to contribute to the discussion of personally experienced changes by creating a medium in the field of art and art theory that offers an alternative to the generally accepted ideas about what is currently happening in post-Communist countries.

WHAT DOES THE PROJECT INCLUDE?

The exhibition presents the outcome of more than two years of researching 'social transformation'. It is conceived as an imaginative and analytical space that – with a certain distance – enables the visitor to see and reflect upon the processes of change that started with the fall of the Iron Curtain and have to an extent continued until the present. The way this topic is approached is influenced by a feeling of affiliation to these changes, which are in a way co-formed by us and whose impact affects and influences us. It is therefore an attempt to look at 'transformation' as a 'lived out' and gradually receding process.

The curators do not believe that art can provide any direct and easily applicable answers to political and social problems and conflicts. Art does, however, create a space that provides the basic prerequisites upon which thinking, dreaming and discussions about politics and society are based.

The exhibition was followed by a conference, a series of film projections and by the publication 'Dictionary of Transformation' (with more than 60 authors including Chantal Mouffe, Slavoj Žižek, Václav Klaus, Václav Havel, Victor Misiano and many others).
