An international multidisciplinary art project focused on the interrelationship between the body and the city. The theme of the "Ideal City" appears often in Mediterranean cultural tradition, rooted in the notion that the "ideal city should be constructed according to the proportions of the human body". The past and present of city planning and architecture in connection with the human body was the starting point for “Sites of Imagination”, which aims to establish a cultural dialogue between artists and researchers in Mediterranean cities.
A tension between the utopian "imaginary city" and the "organic city", determined by the needs and activities of a city's inhabitants, was the starting point for the research and artistic work during “Sites of Imagination”.
In a 12-month period, five multidisciplinary teams of artists (from the fields of dance, theatre and multimedia) and theoreticians (including architects, dramaturgs and historians) worked around the theme of 'imaginary sites' of the human body and the Mediterranean city.
Each team was supported by one of five co-producers of the project: Alkantara - Lisboa, Bunker - Ljubljana, Carovana - Cagliari, L’Animal a L’Esquena - Girona, and L’Officina - Marseille.
At the beginning of the project, teams met for two weeks in Lisbon. Afterwards, they worked individually and created links with their own city and other Mediterranean cities outside of the European Union (involving the research residency). At the end of the project, teams met again for two weeks in Barcelona when the individual projects were linked together and final results were presented.
Joint organisers of the project were members of the Mediterranean Dance Network - Danse Bassin Méditerranée (DBM).
